Aberdeen Diversity Sponsors Juan Sanchez Trio

Many teachers in today’s educational system will tell you that a large portion of time in the school day goes toward social interaction - teaching children to accept one another, treat others as they would like to be treated, and work through conflict in a non-violent way.
This week, the teachers and students of Aberdeen’s elementary public and parochial schools will have these lessons reinforced through the songs and storytelling of the Juan L. Sanchez Trio.
“For more than a decade, Spanish-born Juan L. Sanchez has thrilled audiences of all ages with a unique performing style full of warmth and humor that stresses audience participation and focuses on themes such as peace-building, tolerance, self-esteem and multicultural celebration,” according to a news release.
Sanchez, who lives in Pacific Grove, Calif., describes himself as a bilingual singer, songwriter, educator and recording artist.
In addition to schools, the trio will deliver a mini-performance at the 3M manufacturing plant on Tuesday afternoon.
Sanchez will also lead a teacher workshop at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at C.C. Lee Elementary School. “The workshop will focus on the challenge for educators everywhere - how to address the needs of the ever-increasing number of students from diverse and multicultural backgrounds while maintaining high teaching standards,” according to the release. “Drawing from personal self-reflection and classroom examples, Sanchez’s workshop singles out and discusses several qualities of intercultural competencies that seem useful for teachers. Specific activities and resources will be presented in a fun and interactive format.”
The school and community residency will conclude with a public performance at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Capitol Theatre, 415 S. Main St.
Tickets are on sale at the ARCC (Aberdeen Recreation and Cultural Center) complex, 225 Third Ave. S.E., from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. They’re priced at $12 for adults, $10 for Aberdeen Area Arts Council members and $5 for students through college. All seats are general admission.
