Dec. 1

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Tomorrow, Dec. 1 not only recognises World AIDS Day but also commemorates the arrest of Rosa Parks, in 1955, for defying segregation by refusing to give up her seat on the bus for a white passenger. The incident led to a protest which led to the end of legal segregation.

There is another tradition today, although not formally recognised by the United Nations. It’s called “No More Turkey Day.” People throw away the leftovers and craves any food not in the same family as turkey, stuffing or potatoes.

Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

The calendar listings only allow me a minimum amount of words, so events which have complicated schedules have to be continued on the blog.

The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe will be held at Sacred Heart Cathlolic Church, 409 3rd Ave. S.E., Aberdeen, on Saturday, Dec. 12.

At 6 a.m. is Las Mananitas, a traditional ceremony intended as an early morning serenade of the Virgin on her feast day. After the short service there is a procession with song and prayer. Traditional Mexican hot chocolate and pan dulce will be served.

At 7:30 p.m. is a bilingual Mass celebrating the day that Juan Diego who, in 1531, received a gift from the Virgincita, her image on his tilma. Traditional Mexican hot chocolate, pan dulce and cookies will be served.

To join the choir simply come to the practices Nov. 17 at 6:30, Nov. 24 at 6:30 and Dec. 12 at 5:30 all in the Sacred Heart Choir loft. Bring musical instruments if you have them.

Busy, busy, busy

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

Haven’t blogged and that’s my bad. Been pretty busy. Had a Focus Group in Veblen last week which was an amazing time. On Thursdays it’s Mexican Night at a local restaurant and the food was amazing. At any rate, I’ll post an article about the results of the group on the Articles page in the next few days. I was in another meeting so missed the Korean Fest at Northern State University on Monday but I understand that there were about 370 people in attendance that that it was a great event.
